Let me know if you know who created it.

I did, however, found out who the quote is credited to which no other site that’s posted it has bothered to figure out.

Thanks to my father-in-law for sending this one in after seeing it posted on Facebook.

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” - Howard Thurman

I also found it interesting that “Come Alive!” is also the title of the great book on Sister Corita by Julie Ault. I’m excited to be taking part in a writing workshop with Julie in the spring so I hope to find out if there’s indeed a connection to that title.

Ray Fenwick is an awesome artist/illustrator/dood from Canada who incorporates amazing hand drawn type in a lot of his work. I’ve worked with him several times over the years including stuff for the wurst and also creating some amazing shirt graphics for me when I was art directing t-shirts at Nike.

We got this print when Pantry Press printed it back in 2007, and I still love it for several reasons. I was a huge fan of Bill & Ted’s Excellent adventure and the phrase is super relevant to what I feel my work is about right now…and it’s a plain good advice for everyone!

Maybe Pantry Press will reprint it in a new colorway!

“If I had six hours to cut down a tree, I’d spend...

“If I had six hours to cut down a tree, I’d spend the first four sharpening the saw” -Abraham Lincoln

This one comes from a fella that goes by the name of Vincent Griffin. I met him through the wonders of that magical thing called Instagram and have since been scheming up different collaboration projects that I’m really excited about. He’s also the force behind the band Bear Colony that has some great tunes to shake what your momma gave you.

Here’s what Vince had to say about the quote he selected:

“I stumbled across this quote while doing some research on James Victore’s dinner party series. It struck a chord within me because as designers, illustrators, communicators, etc… I think what’s more important than the work is what makes your work meaningful. I am a collector of many things… music, posters, books, experiences and it all plays into how I work and what ideas come to me. Often times I will sit or go for a walk before starting a project and gather thoughts on what strikes me as relevant. How will I tell my story through imagery? How will I be honest? I am sharpening the saw per say by collecting and it always makes the work that I do important to me.

I hope that makes sense!

Thanks for having me be a part of this awesome project!”

Never Tell Me That You’ve Given Up and Joined Them - Eliot Khalil Wilson

It’s a pretty amazing app that goes a long way in simulating all the painstaking details in the art of letterpress. So painstaking that I didn’t have the patience to lay out a design in the traditional way, backwards type, furniture and all and used the short cuts to just lay down some type and roll…it’s still took me a good part of the evening.

I also used it as an excuse to put together a new quote image for this here blog. This is a quote I’ve posted on my own blog and twitter and most likely started my obsession with documenting inspiring quotes. I read William Morris’ utopian novel “News from Nowhere” last year and was blown away by it’s relevance to everything going on in my head at the time and then now with the Occupy movement. You can download it free in a variety of formats and I highly recommend it.

“I don’t want art for a few any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few” - William Morris

“All One or All None!” -Dr. Bronner
While I’m...

“All One or All None!” -Dr. Bronner

While I’m waiting for some awesome people who’ve expressed interest in working on making a quote I thought I’d throw one up (pun intended!) myself.

One of the most impressive pieces of naive package design has to be for none other than Dr. Bronner’s Soap…full package seen below the quote image*. When I first took a moment to soak in the amazing copy on this soap package I was blown away by the passion that leaped off the paper. I had to find out more.

Years later a documentary came out about Dr. Bronner and revealed the mind behind the magic.

All that said…this quote by Dr. Bronner that is also featured on the soap has been a guiding force for me and my work. This world has so many divisive forces at work, anything I can do to help unite people is high on my priority list before I leave spaceship Earth.

*(They’ve unfortunately changed the design of the soap packaging now to a boring more corporate look which I find very sad.)

YEAH! This one comes from Grace Hwang who is also a part of the MFA program I’m in and it’s super relevant to Social Practice work.

From Grace:

Poster created for exhibition with Q2L students at MoMA’s Education Center 12/22/11.

Please join staff from MoMA’s Education Department School Visits program tomorrow (Thursday morning), Dec. 22, between 10am and 11:30am for an “exhibition” of work created by students from the Quest to Learn School. q2l.org/

School Visits Educator Grace Hwang and Quest to Learn Codeworlds teacher Kate Selkirk have been working in MoMA’s galleries and classrooms with 8th grade students as part of their end-of-term Boss Level Week. They have been exploring the Museum’s collection, considering definitions of art and discovering ways that artists create works that engage the visitor as participant. Influenced by artists such as Rirkrit Tiravanija, Felix González-Torres and Grace’s own Take Comfort project, students have created their own visitor-interactive artwork to be exhibited on Thursday morning.

Stop by at any time between 10 and 11:30am tomorrow in the Cullman lobby and mezzanine to experience and participate in multiple different engaging art projects developed by these students!

Coffee and donuts from Francis and Jessica and Hot Chocolate from Zakiyyah and Isis while they last!

Video of Fluxus re-performance of Benjamin Patterson’s Paper Piece (vimeo.com/33964654 password to view: yam)
Original Take Comfort project documentation: www.psusocialpractice.org/grace-hwang/

—————————
School Visits and partnerships are made possible by endowments established by The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation, William Randolph Hearst Foundation, Mimi and Peter Haas Fund, and by the gift of Emmett S. and Jamie L. Watson. Major annual support is provided by Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder, in association with America’s Promise, and Epstein Teicher Philanthropies. Additional support is provided by The Bloomingdale’s Fund of the Macy’s Foundation, Saltzman Foundation, Murray and Belle Nathan, and other generous donors.

Now we’re rollin’. Today’s entry is from a great designer I’ve had the pleasure to get to know over the past year…Justin Flood. He’s worked pretty closely with some of the people in my MFA program, designing great pieces like this.

Here’s his explanation for his contribution for Cite to Excite:

Hi Jason,

I’ve been lucky enough spend this last week with the good folks at the Epicenter, a resource center for affordable housing and small businesses and a hub for community based art, design and architecture projects in Green River, Utah.

It was pretty amazing to witness the work of a small group of young professionals so committed to and engaged with their place and community on so many levels. Green River has a population of just 953 and this creates an interesting, intimate (and sometimes overly intimate) dynamic. Folks know their neighbors, they know their mayor, they know the postal workers and the servers at the diner. In a bigger city, community can feel like more of a concept than a reality, but on such a small scale the sense of community is unavoidable. This creates a dynamic which is both wonderful and warm and potentially challenging for an outsider.

In my time in Green River the Epicenter crew attended a monthly meeting with the city council and the chamber of commerce. We spoke with folks in neighboring cities about approaches to community and business development. The organization is in the midst of constructing a Habitat for Humanity house as well as several design projects for local businesses: everything from creating menus and online presence to painting exterior signage and drafting site plans for a new fire department building.

I spent one of my final days taking a series of these funky photos in the desert with my new friend and epicenter co-founder Jack Forinash. It was a fun, intuitive and experimental project with no real final product in mind, so I thank you for giving the photo a place to exist. It think its a pretty fitting pairing with the quote from Lucy Lippard’s The Lure of the Local, a text which I’ve been enamored with since the author’s inspiring PASPMLS lecture in October.

Best,

Justin

This isn’t an image that was created specifically for this blog but I think it might be the original inspiration for making it. Here’s the write up that gives the background on the piece.

“Brad Simon and Jason Sturgill created a limited edition print entitled “Words of Walton” as part of the Boomshakala! show at Land which celebrated the Portland Trailblazers. Curated by Clifton Burt.

This quote is from the 1967-77 NBA Championship Trailblazers’ Bill Walton.

While the quote is specifically about Basketball, it’s really a life lesson that can be applied to anything, which is what makes it so powerful.

The print is a two color silkscreen.

Signed and numbered, and edition of 20.”

“Art is whatever you can get away with”* -Marshall...

“Art is whatever you can get away with”* -Marshall McLuhan

And we’re live! I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off this collaborative blog thing than this image by Eric Mast. I’ve known Eric since I moved to Portland in 1998 and I was still doing Hit or Miss Records. His record label and zine were a big inspiration to me and he’s always coming up with new projects that continue to inspire.

He was also in my first wurst gallery show where he did this awesome thing.

Thanks, E-ROCK!
